The “Rene Cassin” Alliance high-school in Jerusalem is a warm and inclusive community for its 1400 students and 140 teachers and employees. The school fosters the students as independent and sensitive young people, capable of autonomous and critical thinking. The school contributes to their development as pluralist and cultural youth, aware of, and show involvement and responsibility in their social and natural environment, mindful of the values of human dignity and liberty. As a six-year institute, we strive to maintain consistent educational messages and values from middle school to high school. The educational standard in middle school is heightened due to the high standards in high school classes, and its students reflect the advantages of creativity and innovation that was cultivated in junior high.

The school was named in honor of Professor Rene Cassin, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. We believe it is the school’s duty to foster the students as autonomous and ideological people by deepening their awareness and commitment to the values of human dignity and liberty. Therefore, the everlasting universal efforts to achieve and maintain the human rights to all people regardless of their social and national origins are a part of the schools values and vision. The educational staff at the school is preparing and developing programs and activities in order to strengthen the connection between human rights and democratic society. According to these programs, the students learn to link different moral and social positions with current events. The purpose of these programs is to create higher awareness to the importance of recognizing and understanding human rights.

Two key elements in the school’s vision are moral education and intellectual education. Moral education is centered on the value of personal choice, and presents the complexity of weighing conflicting values in democracy. Democratic values in education do not mean a limitless environment, but an education that is founded on the primacy of human and civil rights, and the preservation of democracy. Intellectual education fosters independent, logical and critical thinking, and promotes learning that is based on intellectual curiosity and an open mind. It aims to develop tolerance for different views, opinions and cultures. We seek to translate these educational perspectives into action, and to integrate them into the school’s pedagogic programs, so they will not remain an empty slogan.

According to this educational approach, the school aims to promote a number of educational, personal and social goals and objectives. In the school, we encourage students to widen their horizons, and expose them to diverse opinions. In this way we help students develop their critical thinking abilities, and offer them the opportunity to choose their own interests, and make their own decisions. In addition, we discuss different issues of concern and emotional relevance to the student as adolescents and as Israeli youth, including issues in the Israeli-Jewish culture and values, in order to try to increase the students’ self-awareness, and help them consolidate their personal and collective identity. Students are exposed to events occurring in and around the world, listen to diverse opinions, discuss events while being informed of the facts, and form an opinion based on understanding and knowledge. In addition, the school aims to develop students’ learning skills necessary to promote an autonomous learner. In the school students are exposed to various cultural contents. This way the school helps students to learn and grow into a pleasant, nurturing and enriching atmosphere.

“The school views diversity as an important value and strive to promote diversity and personal and social uniqueness in the classrooms”, so says the school principal, Mrs. Violet Gez. The school encourages each student to realize their potential by nurturing their own uniqueness. In addition, we allow students at different levels to study in the same classroom, and participate together in the various social and cultural activities. In this way we also help close educational gaps while still promoting and fostering excellence in the classroom.
