Identity-Based Pedagogy

At the core of Identity-Based Pedagogy lies a simple yet profound understanding that there is an inherent and essential connection between a pupil’s identity and their success. A pupil’s personal story - what they know about themselves, their origins, and the role of family and community in their lives - is not a peripheral element, but a fundamental and inseparable part of the learning process.

The key to educational mobility lies in the positive affirmation of the pupils’ identity, in recognizing their culture, and in nurturing a sense of belonging to Jewish tradition and Israeli society. A stronger understanding of their identity- their story, values, family, and the communities to which they belong - enhances pupils’ sense of confidence, self-worth and belief in themselves. Their motivation to learn and grow increases, while their ability to shape their own future and positively impact those around them continues to expand - giving them both “roots and wings.” The key to educational mobility lies in the positive affirmation of the pupils’ identity, in recognizing their culture, and in nurturing a sense of belonging to Jewish tradition and Israeli society. Their motivation to learn and grow increases, while their ability to shape their own future and positively impact those around them continues to expand - giving them both “roots and wings.” The rapid changes taking place in education, culture, and everyday life have weakened pupils’ natural connection to their homes and roots, further challenging their sense of belonging. Identity-Based Pedagogy seeks to give voice to the long silences in the classrooms, illuminate blind spots, restore what has been excluded, and provide space and recognition for what has been pushed out of the learning environment, yet continues to exist powerfully in the pupil’s inner life. Pupils’ identities are neither fixed nor one-dimensional; they are dynamic, evolving, and layered. Identity-Based Pedagogy recognizes the multitude of identities present in every classroom. It aims to shape a learning environment and educational climate that encourages teachers and pupils to re-engage with their own stories with respect and compassion, bringing those stories into the learning space. The recognition of identity creates a foundation for meaningful learning and academic achievement, while also strengthening a sense of proactive agency. Engaging with identity in this way requires more than just acknowledging diversity; it demands an active willingness to embrace it and build an equitable environment that enables social mobility.

The concept of Identity-Based Pedagogy was developed by "Alliance: Kol Israel Haverim" and is implemented through its extensive work within Israeli society. Over the years, the need has grown to make the principles of Identity-Based Pedagogy accessible beyond the organization’s internal frameworks.
