The Alliance story of Jewish communities in the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa

'Allianstory' is a unique website that tells the story of the Jewish communities in the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa that operated in the Alliance, through the perspectives and human stories of key figures in school and community life in those countries.

This is a story about bold educational frameworks, established with the support of local leadership, community leaders and rabbis, and which brought about a dramatic change in the status of Jews in their countries.

The schools provided modern Jewish education to boys and girls, offering universal education and professional training, alongside religious studies and Hebrew language instruction.

Through 280 schools, attended by more than a million students, a new educated generation committed to bridging tradition and modernity, and to the meeting point between East and West arose in the eastern countries.

Bringing the legacy of Alliance into Israeli society offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of the Jewish communities in their countries of origin, and to change common misconceptions in Israeli society regarding these communities. “Allianstory” offers native-born Israelis a deep, meaningful foundation for their identity, and opens a window into the world of the first immigrants to Israel in the early years of the state.
